Topic of the Day (or should I say Night?): “Mimi-nashi Hoichi” ? The No-Ears Ghost Story!

At 2AM on September 19,2025,in a state of caffeinated enlightenment,this brilliant nonsense popped into my head?and now that I'm sober,I'm still posting it. Even if it's embarrassing. ESPECIALLY if it's embarrassing!!

So,you know how online,people always use that Yu-Gi-Oh! episode?“Jounouchi dies!”?as the classic spoiler meme?

Yeah,that's nothing.

I raise you one: Mimi-nashi Hoichi.

Now THAT's the real spoiler bomb.

For those who don't know,Mimi-nashi Hoichi (“Hoichi the Earless”) is an old Japanese ghost story classic.

Hoichi's a badass biwa (Japanese lute) player. So good,in fact,that even vengeful spirits become obsessed and summon him every night to perform.

But night after night of spooky gigs takes a toll,and Hoichi starts wasting away.

To save him,a monk gets an idea: he'll write sacred sutras all over Hoichi's body to make him invisible to ghosts.

Why? Because these sutras lead spirits to enlightenment,and anything that tries to drag you to hell can't see what's already halfway to heaven.

So as long as he's covered in these spiritual “cloaking runes,” he's safe. That was the plan.

BUT!

The monk?absolute legend that he is?FORGOT TO WRITE ON HOICHI'S EARS.

Guess what the ghost sees?

Yep. Just two floating ears.

WELL THEN READ THE STORY.

Seriously,it's a thrilling horror ride full of suspense and one giant “oh no” moment.

The fact that Hoichi ends up being called “Earless Hoichi” is a spoiler in itself?and a brilliant piece of reverse foreshadowing.

Okay,okay. I know this is an old story and the title “Mimi-nashi Hoichi” is iconic. Totally fine.

But BECAUSE the title is “Earless Hoichi,” don't you feel like we deserve a sequel?

Spoiler alert (but not really?it's like 200 years old):

Hoichi has his ears ripped off by the ghost.

Hence the whole "Earless” bit.

Clean narrative payoff. Nice callback,ghost-san.

BUT! Think about this.

Those ears? They're now literally in hell.

Which means Hoichi's ears can now hear hell.

Dude's got Hell Ears.

So why stop there?

He's got hell-hearing powers PLUS demon-mesmerizing biwa skills.

Wouldn't it be awesome if he became like… a supernatural detective?

Think about it:

Each week,Mimi-nashi Hoichi solves eerie mysteries using his “earless” extrasensory perception.

He hears both the voices of the living and the whisperings of the dead.

It's CSI: Afterlife meets Spiritual MTV Unplugged.

Honestly,the title “Earless Hoichi” kind of demands this direction.

A horror hero who solves ghostly crimes using the very thing he lost?

Now THAT'S poetic justice.
