Park Debut

This story was told to me by K, a housewife who had recently moved into a suburban apartment complex.

She had a two?year?old son, and hoping to help him overcome his shyness, she decided it was time for his “park debut.”

The park was sunny and pleasant, with new playground equipment and lots of parents and children.

But despite the cheerful atmosphere, K's son struggled to fit in with the other kids.

Since he had always been a little shy, K decided to be patient and keep bringing him back.

No matter how many times they visited, though, he continued to play by himself.

At least, that's what it looked like to K.

Her son insisted that he wasn't playing alone ? he said he always played with a girl in the sandbox.

The girl, he explained, was a little older than him and always wore a long?sleeved dress.

Together, they buried toys in the sand.

That night, curious about this mysterious “girl,” K went to the park and dug around in the part of the sandbox where her son usually played.

There, buried beneath the damp sand, she found a small, mud?caked box.

When she pried open the lid, she saw a jumble of things inside: the crushed remains of beetles, what looked like a bird's leg, and ? worst of all ? several tiny finger?like objects, dark red and slick with a viscous, mucus?like slime.

A damp, clinging smell rose from the earth ? sweet and rotten, like something long decayed.

K let out a silent scream and fled the park as fast as she could.

After that, she began taking her son to a different park farther away.

Later, she heard from one of the local moms that there had been no reports of any strange box being found in the sandbox the next day.

No one had seen anything unusual at all.
